Berry picking in January may sound unusual. However, in Dnipropetrovsk region, this is quite a feasible task when it comes to the thorn bush – a prickly shrub also known as "wild plum." Its frost resistance allows the fruits to remain on the branches even after the harshest winter cold. Our fellow citizen Alexander Vanzha took a photo of the plant, clearly showing the abundance of fruits even during this cold season, as reported by "Vidomo."
The thorn bush primarily grows in well-lit areas: forest edges, slopes of ravines, along riverbanks, and in thickets. This hardy plant easily adapts to various conditions, although it prefers light, well-drained soils.
Its flowering occurs in April-May, when the shrub is covered with numerous white, delicate flowers that emit a subtle fragrance. However, the true value of the thorn bush lies in its fruits. Small, dark blue or almost black berries ripen in September, but due to their high frost resistance, they remain on the branches until deep winter, acquiring a richer, tart flavor and concentrated aroma. It is at this time, after the first frosts, that many residents of Dnipropetrovsk go in search of this winter harvest.

The fruits of the wild plum are a real treasure trove of nutrients. They are rich in vitamins C, PP, B group, as well as trace elements such as potassium, magnesium, iron, and phosphorus. Thanks to their high antioxidant content, they positively influence the immune system, help strengthen blood vessels, and lower cholesterol levels. Regular consumption may aid in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and overall health improvement.

The culinary applications of this fruit are quite diverse. Fresh berries are used to make jams, jellies, and preserves, known for their unique flavor with a slight tartness and pleasant astringency. They are excellent for preparing beverages: compotes, kissels, tinctures, and even wine.
Dried wild plum berries serve as a wonderful tea substitute, imparting a rich, vibrant aroma and a slightly astringent taste to the drink. Such tea has warming properties and can be particularly beneficial in colder seasons.
Moreover, this berry can be used to prepare delicious sauces for meat dishes, added to baked goods, and used as a filling for pies. However, one should be mindful of the thorny branches of the thorn bush, which remain even in winter. Berry picking requires certain caution, so it’s better to wear gloves to avoid unpleasant pricks.

Additionally, fresh berries should be thoroughly washed before consumption. It’s also important to remember that overripe berries may have a more astringent taste, so for some dishes, it’s better to use berries picked at the optimal ripeness period.
In any case, January berry picking of the thorn bush in Dnipropetrovsk is a unique opportunity to enjoy the taste and benefits of this remarkable berry, filling your body with vitamins and experiencing true pleasure from being in nature during the winter season.
