Ukraine insists on the complete isolation of Russia in the field of nuclear energy following the strike on the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. It is unacceptable that representatives of the Russian atomic sector are still in leadership positions within international organizations.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
The ministry reminded that last night, on February 14, 2025, Russia launched a drone strike on the New Safe Confinement over the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. It is known that the attack on the civilian nuclear infrastructure led to a fire at the site.
"This is yet another escalation of nuclear terrorism from Russia, which has repeatedly committed such crimes during its invasion of Ukraine. The world has already seen how Russia deliberately destroys Ukrainian cities, kills children, and obliterates critical civilian infrastructure," the Foreign Ministry stated.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is a civilian nuclear facility that was decommissioned as a result of the most terrible technological disaster in human history.
"Any strike on it or in the Chernobyl zone is an attack not only on Ukraine but also on global nuclear safety," they added.
At the same time, the Foreign Ministry recalled that Russia continues to occupy the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear station in Europe.
"It is unacceptable that against the backdrop of these crimes, representatives of the Russian atomic sector, who advise the Russian military on strikes against Ukrainian nuclear infrastructure, continue to participate in international forums, promote Russian nuclear technologies, and even remain in leadership positions within international nuclear organizations," the ministry emphasized.
In light of this, Ukraine has insisted on the complete isolation of Russia in the field of nuclear energy and the exclusion of its representatives from leadership roles in international organizations.
"We will also raise the issue of Russian threats to global nuclear safety, manipulations, and pressure on the authority of the IAEA during the next IAEA Board of Governors meeting. We call on the international community to immediately increase pressure on Russia and hold it accountable for this and other acts of nuclear terrorism," the ministry concluded.
Recall that today, February 14, Russia attacked the shelter of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) with a strike drone.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that the Russian drone that attacked the sarcophagus at the Chernobyl NPP flew at an altitude of 85 meters, which made it undetectable by radar.
Later, the SBU showed the wreckage of the drone that attacked the ChNPP on February 14. The occupiers targeted the plant with a "Shahed" type drone.
In the RBC-Ukraine article, you can learn more about what is known about the consequences of the Russian attack on the ChNPP.
