The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, is exploring options to initiate negotiations between Russia and Ukraine to end the war, including the plan proposed by General Keith Kellogg, who has been announced as a candidate for the position of special representative for Ukraine issues.
According to CNN, citing informed sources, the Trump administration is likely to propose an immediate ceasefire to temporarily freeze the conflict while negotiations are ongoing. At the same time, the U.S. plans to urge NATO European allies to take on a larger share of the financial burden in support of Ukraine.
"We need to bring this to a responsible conclusion. We must restore deterrence, reestablish peace, and get ahead of this escalation rather than react to it," said Volz in a recent interview with Fox News.
Among the options being discussed is Kellogg's proposal, which suggests that further military assistance to Ukraine would depend on its participation in peace talks with Russia. Under this plan, Ukraine's accession to NATO might be delayed for a long time to encourage Russia to engage in negotiations.
Another idea currently being considered requires Russia to maintain control over the occupied territories of Ukraine in exchange for its accession to NATO. There is no consensus within the Trump administration on this issue, and the prospects for Ukraine joining the Alliance in the near future remain uncertain.
CNN sources note that a final strategy for resolving the war has yet to be formed, as Trump frequently changes his views on foreign policy. The decision-making process regarding Ukraine is likely to be unstable.
At the same time, Trump's allies, such as Sebastian Gorka, are displaying a tougher rhetoric. Gorka stated that the new administration could significantly increase military assistance to Ukraine to compel Russia to negotiate.
“The President is telling Putin: You will negotiate now, or the assistance we have already provided to Ukraine will seem like mere trifles,” Gorka said.
The strategy formation process is ongoing, and all possibilities for conflict resolution are being explored.
