Trump understands that significant concessions from Ukraine are unlikely, which is why he is trying to persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to abandon his most radical objectives in the war.
As reported by Espreso, this was shared by former U.S. Secretary of State advisor and Europe and Eurasia expert Matthew Bryza. According to the diplomat, the primary goal is to compel Putin to cease claims over parts of Ukraine and to abandon attempts to restore sovereignty over these territories.
Specifically, Bryza emphasized that Trump plans to use economic levers, such as imposing high tariffs, to pressure the Russian economy, which is already in a precarious state. In light of severe economic instability in Russia, new sanctions and tariffs could deal a heavy blow to the nation's economy. The diplomat pointed out that if Russia does not agree to a peace that aligns with Ukraine's interests, the U.S. is prepared to significantly ramp up its sanctions.
This is a "struggle for power, and Trump is using America's economic levers" to force Russia into a compromise, Bryza notes.
"I am going to do a huge favor for Russia, whose economy is collapsing, and for President Putin. Make a deal now and end this senseless war!" Trump stated, emphasizing that if an agreement is not reached soon, he will have no choice but to impose high taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on everything Russia sells to the U.S. and other countries.
