EU leaders state that if Trump's threats are realized, the countries in the bloc will have to take necessary measures.
According to the Financial Times, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that he "definitely" plans to impose new tariffs against Europe, mirroring the approach he has already taken with China, Canada, and Mexico. EU leaders have not ignored these threats. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that a trade war would have negative consequences for both the U.S. and Europe.
"As a strong economic zone, we (the EU) can shape our own affairs, and we can also respond to tariff policies with our own tariff policies," he stated.
French President Emmanuel Macron stressed that Europe must promote domestic products to strengthen its trade positions. The European Commission has already prepared corresponding measures in case Trump’s new customs policy is implemented, but the details of this strategy are kept confidential. EU officials note that they are "ready to act if necessary."
In response to potential trade restrictions, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo highlighted the importance of negotiations with Trump.
"We must negotiate with Trump... this is one of the most important issues today. I do not intend to start a war. I want to start negotiations," he emphasized.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda also suggests that Europe strengthen its economic ties with the U.S., particularly due to large purchases of energy resources and defense products. He believes that the EU can enter into new agreements in the automotive and free trade sectors.
