Previously, Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours, but the situation appears to be much more complex as Russia shows no willingness to make any concessions.
According to The New York Times, a key factor will be whether Trump wants to maintain the central role of the U.S. in the conflict — providing intelligence, weapons, and allowing Ukraine to strike Russian territory.
Many senior U.S. officials, both Democrats and Republicans, lean towards the idea that, as part of a forthcoming agreement, Russia will likely retain control over approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory — which could serve as the basis for a ceasefire similar to the one that ended the Korean War in 1953.
However, the most challenging aspect of any agreement will be ensuring that Russia does not take advantage of the ceasefire to rearm and rebuild its forces. In particular, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan notes that to ensure Ukraine's security, the Biden team has been working on creating the necessary "architecture," although President Zelensky insists that only NATO membership will provide real protection against new attacks.
The publication also mentions that Trump may withdraw permission for Ukraine to strike Russian territory, which would be a significant step towards reducing U.S. involvement in the conflict. However, this stance raises concerns among some members of his party who believe continued military support for Ukraine is essential.
Meanwhile, Russia is advocating for more serious concessions from the U.S., including the withdrawal of American troops and weapons from Europe. Trump, according to sources, has remained silent for now.
