Former UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Marie Guéhenno shared his assessment of the potential impact of newly elected US President Donald Trump on the ongoing war in Ukraine.

As reported by Le Monde, Trump may compel European countries to become more actively involved in the conflict, potentially even demanding that they send their troops to the front lines. Guéhenno noted that this could be part of the US strategy to support Ukraine, which would exert political pressure on Europe.

A particularly significant factor is whether Trump will consider Ukraine to be more strategically important to the US than Vietnam or Afghanistan. According to the expert, abandoning Ukraine would signal to China and could have serious repercussions for global geopolitics. Guéhenno believes that Trump may prove to be more decisive than his predecessors, which could alter the course of the war either in favor of or to the detriment of Ukraine.

The expert also highlighted Europe's role. He argues that if the US reduces its military assistance, Europe will need to shoulder a greater share of the burden. However, this requires "political will," with Germany being the key country in this regard.

"This is where a possible European rift may emerge. One of the key questions is Germany. What lesson will Berlin take from the arrival of the new Trump administration? This will be crucial, because without Germany, it will be very difficult to mobilize the European Union," the expert explained.

According to Guéhenno, Trump will indeed divide Europe.
