The USA and Russia may be conducting secret negotiations regarding the end of the war behind Ukraine's back.
Oleg Shamur, the former extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Ukraine to the USA and France, shared this in an interview with OBOZ.ua. He pointed out the possibility of a new "Yalta scenario," where the leaders of the USA, Russia, and China could make decisions without Ukraine's involvement, potentially leading to serious consequences for its sovereignty.
"To prevent this from happening, it is crucial for our position to always be clear. Europeans must also react, not just by talking about 'preventing the division of Ukraine' but by complementing their rhetoric with concrete actions. The danger of a 'Yalta' scenario exists. I began to think about this especially after Trump's statements that seemed unrelated to Ukraine. In my opinion, they create a very alarming foundation for negotiations and possible contacts between Trump and Putin," Shamur noted.
He added that the Kremlin's response to Trump's sharp comments has been restrained, and Putin is presumably continuing attempts to manipulate the American leader, aligning his actions with Trump's personal ambitions. Shamur believes that for Putin, negotiations are not so much about achieving a peaceful resolution but rather about regrouping forces and continuing aggression against Ukraine. However, he also acknowledged that the Russian economy has significantly weakened, and Putin needs to "rest" to continue the offensive. The former ambassador emphasized that Putin and his entourage view the possibility of Trump returning to the presidency as a favorable situation for Russia.
"It is very important that all these negotiations between Trump and Putin—whether in person or via phone—do not take place behind our backs, and that the principle of 'nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine' is upheld. But whether this will be the case, I honestly do not know today," the expert stressed.
