The U.S. government is investing billions of dollars to modernize the defense capabilities of this strategic location, which is situated just 1,700 miles from Taiwan.

As military analyst David Axe writes in a column for The Telegraph, if China were to invade Taiwan, Guam could become the primary base for U.S. and allied air, naval, and ground forces.

However, Guam is not entirely shielded from Chinese attacks. Chinese missile forces possess powerful ballistic missiles that can reach the island from mainland China. Additionally, Guam faces threats from Chinese bombers and submarines, which can launch cruise missiles.

In response to these threats, the Pentagon is implementing a comprehensive defense program that includes the installation of advanced missile systems, such as the Mark 41 vertical launch systems, which have already been tested during recent exercises. In 2024, a successful test of the missile defense system was conducted in Guam, during which an SM-3 missile struck a target simulating a ballistic missile.

Nevertheless, despite the robust defensive measures, experts point out that modern missile defense alone is insufficient for the island's complete protection. It is anticipated that the enhancement of Guam's defenses will be completed by 2026 and will include numerous launch systems, radars, and the latest systems to counter missile threats.
