Russia is actively utilizing artificial intelligence to create fake videos aimed at discrediting Vice President Kamala Harris.
According to the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center, AI-generated videos contain false accusations and are intended to undermine the electoral campaign.
One example is a video that accuses Harris of poaching in Zambia. Although most of these videos do not achieve significant popularity, some manage to garner millions of views. For instance, a video with false accusations against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz received over 5 million views within the first 24 hours of being posted on platform X.
Analysts note that the use of artificial intelligence allows for the creation of realistic yet entirely fictional content that can mislead a substantial portion of the public.
Disinformation campaigns aimed at undermining trust in election candidates are not new to the United States. As early as 2016, Russia was accused of interfering in American elections, leading to the imposition of sanctions. However, the use of artificial intelligence to create fake videos elevates these attacks to a new level.
China has also been involved. According to Microsoft, Chinese operatives have targeted Republican Congressional candidates who criticize the People's Republic of China. In particular, the group Taizi Flood spreads anti-Semitic messages and allegations of corruption.
The Microsoft report also mentions the activities of Iranian groups that are promoting calls to boycott elections due to candidates' support for Israel.
