Territorial compromises will not end the war; only real security guarantees from the West can prevent Putin's "triumph."
In his column for Daily Mail, Boris Johnson stated that no territorial compromises will stop the war, as this conflict is not just about land, but about Ukraine's future. According to Johnson, the question is whether Ukraine will be part of the Western world or fall back under Kremlin control.
"If we do not determine Ukraine's fate as part of the West, protected by Western security guarantees, Putin will be assured a triumph. He will keep what he has and will use his position to destabilize and attack Ukraine by any means until the government in Kyiv collapses, civil war breaks out, and the entire country falls."
Boris Johnson adds that Putin and China are trying to impose the message on Ukraine that "the West has abandoned you." The former British Prime Minister believes that this must not be allowed to happen. He also emphasized the need to eliminate bureaucratic barriers that delay arms deliveries to Ukraine and even joked that if necessary, "accounting ninjas" from Elon Musk's team should get involved.
Additionally, the ex-Prime Minister of Britain agreed on the necessity for the U.S. to compensate for its support of Ukraine. As a possible form of compensation, he suggests agreements on rare metals or unblocking frozen Russian assets amounting to $300 billion for Ukraine's reconstruction. It is also crucial to ensure that Europe is ready to defend Ukraine after a ceasefire, clearly defining its path towards EU and NATO membership.
"This war will only end when Putin realizes: Ukraine will never return under his control," Johnson concluded.
