U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for his public criticism of American leader Donald Trump and his peace initiatives.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing BBC News.
Vance described Zelensky's approach as "shameful" and counterproductive, emphasizing that such tactics could jeopardize Ukraine's relationship with its most crucial ally.
"Zelensky is receiving really bad advice, and I don't know from whom. He is no longer dealing with Joe Biden and the Biden administration. He is dealing with Donald Trump and the Trump administration," Vance stated.
According to him, "sorting things out with the U.S. president in a public forum is not the best way to deal with President Trump."
"Of course, Ukrainians will express their opinion. But he is attacking the very reason this country exists, publicly, right now. And that is shameful. And this is not what will convince the President of the United States. In fact, it will have the opposite effect," the U.S. Vice President noted.
He added that he spoke with Trump this morning, and "he is incredibly sympathetic and admires the people of Ukraine."
"He wants the killings to stop. Because he doesn't want innocent Ukrainians to continue dying. He said the goal of the administration is to end the conflict. Zelensky needs to take this seriously," Vance emphasized.
He also condemned European politicians who criticize Trump for suggesting that elections be held in Ukraine.
"The idea that elections cannot be held during wartime is, in my opinion, quite a nonsensical idea. And the president has made it clear that, in his view, this should happen," the U.S. Vice President added.
Recall that on February 18, a meeting took place between American and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia.
According to U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, during the meeting, the two sides agreed to appoint teams to work on "ending the conflict in Ukraine" in a way that would be acceptable to all parties.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine will not recognize the results of such a meeting, as the issue of ending the war was discussed without the Ukrainian side present.
Later, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine did not yield to Russia's ultimatums at the beginning of the full-scale invasion and will not do so now.
Additionally, after the meeting of U.S. and Russian representatives in Saudi Arabia, Trump claimed that President Vladimir Zelensky has a trust rating of 4%.
In turn, Zelensky noted that the information about a supposed 4% trust in him among Ukrainians comes from Russia. According to him, these figures are being discussed between the U.S. and Russia.
Also today, Trump expressed dissatisfaction that presidential elections are not being held in Ukraine during wartime. The American leader referred to President Volodymyr Zelensky as a "dictator without elections."
