The joint investigation team of South Korea has requested an arrest warrant for the suspended President Yoon Suk-yeol. This request stems from his attempt to impose martial law in the country, as well as his disregard for summonses.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Reuters.
The agency notes that Yoon did not respond to numerous summonses for questioning by the police and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials. The two agencies, which are jointly investigating whether Yoon's declaration of martial law on December 3 amounted to a coup, are involved in this case.
The court will make a decision regarding the issuance of the arrest warrant after receiving the request.
Reuters reminds that Yoon was suspended from presidential duties after parliament declared his impeachment in early December due to his decision to briefly impose martial law.
At the same time, the issue of reinstating Yoon or, conversely, his final removal from office is still under consideration by the Constitutional Court. The court has 180 days to reach a decision.
On Friday, the court held its first preparatory session, during which it rejected Yoon's lawyers' request for a postponement of the hearings to prepare better. The court stated that it would act swiftly. The next hearing is scheduled for January 3.
Let us remind you that recently the media reported that Yoon Suk-yeol promised to declare martial law three times in the country if necessary. Furthermore, he allowed the military to fire to enter the parliament building.
