Ukrainian soldiers had the opportunity to use both Soviet and American tanks in combat. They believe that the Abrams outperforms both Soviet and modern Russian equipment.
This is reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Business Insider.
The publication reminds us that Ukraine has a limited number of Abrams tanks. Even though the Ukrainian defenders were not provided with the best modification of the American tanks, they hold this equipment in high regard.
"It (the Abrams - ed.) is better than the T-72, T-62, and even the Russian T-90 (Russia's newest tank - ed.)," one of the Ukrainian tank commanders told Business Insider in an interview.
The publication notes that Abrams were designed to counter Soviet technology. To achieve this, they were equipped with more powerful armor. Additionally, the tank was developed to ensure maximum survivability for the crew.
According to tankers who fought in Iraq, the shells from enemy T-72s "bounced off the Abrams," allowing them to withstand numerous hits while continuing to inflict damage.
Moreover, the shells from American tanks with depleted uranium effectively penetrate enemy armor. Most Russian tanks are unable to use such shells.
At the same time, the powerful gas turbine engine of the Abrams can accelerate the 60-ton tank to 72 kilometers per hour, providing it with sufficient maneuverability.
It is also important to note that ammunition in the Abrams is stored behind the turret and separated from the crew by a protective door. In contrast, Soviet-era tanks store ammunition directly in the turret, which leads to instant destruction in the event of a direct hit.
We remind you that on October 17, Australia announced the transfer of 49 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, which they intended to decommission.
