On Tuesday, January 7, seven foreign "mercenaries" were arrested in Venezuela, who allegedly planned terrorist acts ahead of President Nicolás Maduro's inauguration. Among them are citizens of Ukraine.

This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the EFE agency.

According to Maduro, among those detained are two individuals from the United States, two from Colombia, and three from Ukraine.

"Today we captured seven foreign mercenaries, including two significant American mercenaries," the president stated.

Venezuelan authorities claim that the detainees were planning attacks on Vice President and Minister of Hydrocarbons Delcy Rodríguez. Additionally, the detainees allegedly intended to carry out "terrorist acts" against state services and other "leaders of the Bolivarian Revolution" (a mass socio-political movement formed after Hugo Chávez was elected president of Venezuela in 1998).

Maduro also accused the Argentine government of being involved in the plot against Rodríguez and labeled it as part of "international fascist aggression" directed against Venezuela.

According to Maduro, this group of "mercenaries" is an addition to 125 individuals of 25 nationalities who were detained in November and December.

Presidential Elections in Venezuela

Presidential elections were held in Venezuela on July 28, 2024.

Following the voting results, the Central Election Commission declared Nicolás Maduro the winner. However, the opposition labeled his victory as "fraudulent" and declared their leader Edmundo González Urrutia the winner.

González had been hiding in the Netherlands embassy in Caracas for over a month. He later flew to Spain, where he plans to seek political asylum.

The United States offered Maduro a resignation in exchange for amnesty.

The inauguration of Maduro for a third consecutive six-year term is scheduled for January 10, 2025.

The country's authorities announced the deployment of 1,200 military personnel to "ensure peace." According to Maduro, he will take the presidential oath for the term from 2025 to 2031.

By the way, this is not the only assassination attempt on the Venezuelan leader.

In September, Venezuelan special services detained citizens of the United States, Spain, and the Czech Republic for their involvement in a conspiracy allegedly ordered by the United States.
