On December 28, a Russian attack in Mykolaiv resulted in a leak of approximately 1,800 tons of sunflower oil into the waters of the Bug Liman. The estimated damage amounts to 45 billion hryvnias.
This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the press service of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.
"As a result of a Russian drone striking a storage tank with vegetable oil in Mykolaiv region, an accident occurred that led to soil and water contamination in the Bug Liman bays with an estimated 1,800 tons of sunflower oil," the statement reads.
Initially, an oil slick covering an area of 1,000 square meters with a layer of about 1 cm was recorded. As of January 2, the contaminated area has increased to 9,000 square meters, and the thickness of the layer in some spots reached 10 cm.
The agency reported that specialists from the State Environmental Inspection took 13 samples of water and soil for laboratory testing, with pollutant concentrations in certain locations reaching 189.7 mg/dm³.
The State Emergency Service has already deployed booms in two bays of the Bug Liman to prevent further spread of the contamination. Efforts are also underway to collect the oil and take additional water and soil samples for laboratory analysis.
Approximately 45 tons of vegetable oil have already been collected from the two bays of the Bug Liman. Furthermore, the collection and processing of materials for calculating the environmental damage is ongoing.
According to the Ministry of Environmental Protection, preliminary calculations estimate the total damage at about 45 billion hryvnias. All relevant authorities, including the Mykolaiv branch of the State Enterprise AMPU and the State Environmental Inspection, are actively working on mitigating the consequences.
Recall that on December 28, as a result of drone debris falling during a Russian attack, a storage tank with vegetable oil belonging to an agro-industrial enterprise was damaged in Mykolaiv. Oil leaked onto the adjacent territory and entered the Southern Bug River.
According to Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych, as of January 3, more than 70 tons of oil have already been pumped out.
Relevant services are working on eliminating the aftermath. Additionally, machinery is being used to remove the contaminated layer of soil.
