In Kryvyi Rih, two small birds known as hawfinches were spotted and photographed during a "relationship clarification." The photos were shared on Facebook by photographer Viktor Sevidov, as reported by "Vidomo."

"Hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes). Kryvyi Rih. 2025," – Viktor Sevidov captioned the photo.

The hawfinch can be easily identified in the wild by its large head, robust thick beak, and distinctive coloration: the top of the head and back are brown, the neck is gray, the underside is a brownish-pink, and there is a noticeable black spot on the throat, along with white spots on the black wings and tail (which are especially prominent in flight). The female has less vibrant colors, with plumage displaying a grayish-green hue.

During drinking or feeding, this bird is quite aggressive, both towards its own species and other kinds, even larger birds.

"All birds avoid the feeders when hawfinches are around. They are quite territorial," the photo's author noted in the comments.

The hawfinch also vigilantly guards its small territory after its chicks hatch; however, when there are no offspring to care for, it can act as a sentinel for the entire forest. This behavior is considered an evolutionary advantage, allowing the colony to protect its rear from sudden attacks by nest predators.

The hawfinch is protected under the Bern Convention.
