The first bill regarding Ukraine has been introduced in the lower chamber of the U.S. Congress for the 119th session. It calls for recognizing the actions of the Kremlin in the war against our country as genocide.
As reported by RBK-Ukraine, this statement was made by Ukraine's ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, on Facebook.
"In the first week of its work, Congress has paid significant attention to the fact that Russia commits daily crimes in the war against Ukraine. A resolution has been reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, calling for the recognition of the RF's actions against Ukraine as genocide," Markarova wrote.
According to her, this was the result of cooperation between the Ukrainian embassy in Washington and a bipartisan group of lawmakers in the House of Representatives.
In particular, the preamble of the document states that the atrocities committed by Russian forces in Ukraine, including attacks on civilians, direct strikes on maternity hospitals and medical facilities, as well as the forced relocation of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, including children, to Russia and occupied territories, meet the criteria outlined in Article II of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
The resolution condemns the genocide of the Ukrainian people by the RF and calls on the U.S. along with NATO and the EU to support Ukraine in preventing further crimes. The document also endorses tribunals and investigations to hold Russia accountable for war crimes and aggression.
Previously, we reported that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted a resolution on Ukrainian prisoners of war. PACE will work on their return.
And in June, the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE adopted a resolution recognizing the actions of the RF as genocide against the Ukrainian people. The document also highlights the need for the decolonization of the aggressor state.
