In winter, one can suffer serious injuries from slipping on an icy sidewalk or an uncleared staircase in front of a store or entrance. The responsibility for maintaining these areas lies with the property owner, who is obligated to clear snow and treat ice. If they fail to do so and someone is injured, they must provide compensation. This was reported by the Department of Legal Support of the Dnipro City Council, as conveyed by "Vydomo".

The Law of Ukraine "On the Improvement of Settlements" defines the legal, economic, ecological, social, and organizational foundations for the improvement of settlements and aims to create conditions favorable for human life. The organization of the improvement of settlements is ensured by local executive authorities and local self-government bodies in accordance with the powers established by law.
Improvement must be carried out throughout the entire territory of the settlement (village, town, city). Part 2 of Article 18 of the Law of Ukraine "On the Improvement of Settlements" stipulates that enterprises, institutions, and organizations involved in the improvement of settlements are required to:
– maintain the improvement facilities (or parts thereof) that are in their ownership or use in proper condition, as well as the areas adjacent to these facilities as defined by the improvement rules of the settlement;
– compensate for damages caused by violations of the legislation on the improvement of settlements.
