The Trump administration requested Ukraine to withdraw its annual UN resolution condemning the war initiated by Russia. The United States seeks to replace the document with a softened statement that was perceived in Kyiv as leaning towards pro-Russian sentiments.

This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine, citing The Washington Post.

According to sources from the publication (an official and three European diplomats), Washington's proposal stunned Kyiv, which refused to retract its resolution that is set to be published on Monday, February 24, coinciding with the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion. The Ukrainian side was informed of the new proposal on Friday.

On that day, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a statement saying that Washington "proposed a simple, historical resolution in the United Nations," which they urge all UN member states to support "to chart a path to peace."

"By supporting this resolution, we affirm that this conflict is horrific, that the UN can help bring it to an end, and that peace is possible. We firmly believe that the time has come to commit to ending the war," the statement read.

One of the officials (sources from WP) revealed that Washington reviewed the resolution proposed by Ukraine and "demanded some changes to weaken it," including "pro-Russian" wording in the document. The U.S. then proposed a new resolution, insisting that Kyiv retract its version, which had already been coordinated with other partner countries that planned to sign it.

The official stated that the new proposal "shocked" the Ukrainian side, and President Volodymyr Zelensky instructed the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to withdraw the existing resolution.

"Their proposal is very brief and completely new in language. Many representatives from other countries say it resembles a call for appeasing Putin more than a call for peace," said the WP source.

Furthermore, the publication notes that the appeal from President Donald Trump's administration to Kyiv suggests that the U.S. is trying to "bypass all possible procedures in the UN," demanding that Ukraine voluntarily withdraw its text to pave the way for other countries to sign a softer version from Washington.

"We have many signs of potentially bad events, but what is shocking is that they are pressuring (Ukraine - ed.) but not the Russians," the official added.

As a reminder, yesterday morning, "Voice of America" reported that the U.S. has not yet decided whether to support the UN resolution condemning Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Earlier, RBK-Ukraine reported that Republicans have introduced a bill for the U.S. to withdraw from the UN. It is known that lawmakers intend to present the document in the U.S. House of Representatives.
