Turkey may initiate a military operation in Syria against Kurdish armed groups. Ankara has set specific conditions for the "Kurdistan Workers' Party," which it considers a terrorist organization (PKK/YPG).
This was stated by Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, as reported by RBK-Ukraine citing CNN Türk.
The Turkish official emphasized that Syria must "address the YPG issue."
"As a state, we have been working on this issue for years. Now, with the new reality, we are continuing our path through various scenarios. The most important of these is: the new administration in Syria must clearly address this issue and take the necessary measures to ensure the national and regional integrity of its country," he stated.
The Turkish Foreign Minister also commented on the "ultimatums or conditions" for Kurdish groups in Syrian territory.
"If you do not want a military operation in the region by either us or the new administration in Syria, the conditions for this are clear. We present these conditions very simply, truthfully, without hiding anything or anyone. What are our conditions for you? International terrorists from other countries must leave the country. The leadership of the PKK must leave the country. The leadership of the terrorist organization must exit Syria," Fidan explained.
On the other hand, he added that Syrian Kurds who are not members of the "Kurdistan Workers' Party" should "participate and live a normal life without any harm to their lives and property."
"In other words, the new Syrian administration guarantees us this. Because it is among our conditions," the Turkish minister stated.
He noted that the lives and property of Syrian and Kurdish citizens "will also be safe, and they will join the new administration - they will exist there as equal citizens."
"If the expected actions regarding the terrorist organization YPG are not taken, then what is necessary will be done. This will be a military operation," the Turkish Foreign Minister declared.
Fidan stated that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said "once, and will say again."
"But if there are no results, the legitimate choice will be a military operation (in Syria - ed.)," the Turkish minister emphasized.
It is worth noting that the Turkish army periodically strikes at PKK targets in Syria, and sometimes conducts similar operations in Iraq as well. Ankara labels this organization as terrorist.
Various branches of the PKK, as well as the party itself, claim responsibility for attacks, explosions, and similar incidents on Turkish territory. In particular, in October 2024, the "Kurdistan Workers' Party" announced that their so-called "Battalion of the Immortals" carried out an attack in Turkey on the defense company TUSAŞ.
Additionally, it was reported that in June of last year, Turkish armed forces killed four fighters of the U.S.-backed "Syrian Democratic Forces" in Syria with drone strikes. Ankara accuses this group of having ties with banned Kurdish militants in Turkey.
