Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau explained why newly elected President Donald Trump is discussing the idea of turning Canada into the 51st state of the United States. According to him, these comments are merely a distraction from the consequences of imposing tariffs.

This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing CNN.

"President Trump, who is a very skilled negotiator, is trying to divert attention from the conversation about the 25% tariffs on oil, gas, electricity, steel, aluminum, lumber, and concrete," Trudeau stated.

CNN recalls that in November, Trump promised to significantly increase tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China starting from his first day in office as President of the United States.

"On January 20, as one of my first orders, I will sign all necessary documents to impose a 25% tariff on ALL goods coming from Mexico and Canada, along with their ridiculous open borders. This tariff will remain until drugs, particularly fentanyl, and all illegal foreigners stop this invasion of our country!" Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.

Continuing to comment on the issue, Trudeau stated in an interview with CNN that such a policy could rarely increase costs for American businesses and consumers.

"Everything American consumers buy in Canada will suddenly become much more expensive if he (Trump - ed) continues to impose these tariffs," Trudeau said.

CNN reports that Canada, Mexico, and China are the largest trading partners of the United States.

Recall that a few days earlier, Trudeau stated that Trump's assumption of making Canada a new state of the U.S. through economic leverage is unfeasible.

We also reported that the Prime Minister of Canada recently announced his resignation from the head of government position.
