President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, stated on Saturday that he is likely to grant the social media platform TikTok a 90-day reprieve from a potential ban in the country. This could happen after his inauguration when he officially assumes the presidency.

This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Reuters.

"A 90-day extension is something that will likely be done because it is appropriate. If I decide to do this, I will probably announce it on Monday," Trump said in an interview with NBC.

According to a law passed last year, which was unanimously upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court yesterday, TikTok must sever ties with its parent company ByteDance, based in China, by Sunday. Otherwise, it must cease operations in the United States to alleviate concerns that it poses a national security threat.

Yesterday, TikTok also announced that the app would stop functioning in the U.S. on Sunday unless the administration of the still-sitting President Joe Biden provides guarantees to Apple and Google that they will not face enforcement actions once the ban takes effect.

The White House responded to TikTok's statement, calling it a ploy and noting that taking action is already the prerogative of the new Trump administration.

"We see no reason for TikTok or other companies to take any actions in the coming days before the Trump administration takes office on Monday," said press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

It is worth remembering that Donald Trump reacted to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to uphold the law requiring TikTok to be blocked. The President-elect of the United States stated that he would decide on the operation of the social network.
