The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump informed Mexican officials that they need to impose their own tariffs on Chinese imports. This way, Mexico can avoid the tariffs that Trump is threatening.
This information was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing Bloomberg.
The message was conveyed during a meeting with the Mexican delegation in Washington, which included U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.
Bloomberg notes that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has intensified efforts against cheap imports from China to support domestic industry and also to appease the Trump administration.
However, Mexico did not make any commitments regarding China during the meeting, which concluded with an agreement to establish a working group to continue discussing trade and tariff issues.
Ebrard stated that the meeting in Washington marked the beginning of a "constructive dialogue, and joint efforts will commence on Monday."
Recall that earlier Trump had stated that fentanyl is coming into the U.S. through Mexico and Canada.
This led the American leader to decide on imposing a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada. However, on February 4, he signed an order to suspend these measures, both regarding Mexico and Canada, after speaking with high-ranking officials from these countries who agreed to certain conditions.
