The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, is attempting to shift the responsibility of providing military assistance to Ukraine onto European countries. Instead, he plans to reduce the assistance from the U.S.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing The Washington Post.
The publication reminded that this holiday season marks the third consecutive one since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It suggests that Trump's promise to negotiate an end to the war "leaves many doubting whether there will be a fourth."
"Trump is already pressuring European countries to increase their aid to Ukraine. At the same time, he signals that security assistance from the U.S., as Ukraine's largest supporter, will be reduced," the article states.
The WP also recalled that Trump has yet to reveal the details of how he plans to compel Russian President Vladimir Putin to come to the negotiating table, and that the Ukrainian and Russian delegations have not met since the early months of the war in 2022.
During the election campaign and after his election in early November as President of the United States, Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his readiness to end the war between Russia and Ukraine as quickly as possible.
In particular, the politician promises to negotiate peace with the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Moreover, Trump has repeatedly stated that once he takes office, Ukraine will not receive as much support from the U.S. as it did during Joe Biden's administration.
According to the Financial Times, the newly elected head of the White House plans to continue supplying arms to Ukraine to ensure "peace through strength."
Political expert Taras Zahorodny noted in a comment to RBK-Ukraine that Trump's plan to end the war is still being formulated and the Kremlin is already not thrilled about it.
