The elected U.S. president, Donald Trump, intends to meet with Vladimir Putin as soon as possible, stating that the end of the war against Ukraine depends on him.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Reuters.
In an interview with Newsmax, Trump expressed his desire to meet with Putin shortly after his inauguration on January 20.
"And I know that he (Putin) wants to meet, and I plan to do so very quickly. I would have done it sooner, but... you need to get into office (the White House). For some things, you really need to be there," he said.
When asked about his strategy for ending the war, Trump told Newsmax: "Well, there is only one strategy, and it depends on Putin, and I can't imagine he is thrilled with how things have gone, because it hasn't ended well for him either."
Trump again blamed all the problems on his predecessor, President Joe Biden.
"We wouldn't have any wars. There wouldn't be Russia and Ukraine. We shouldn't have had Israel; Israel wouldn't have been attacked by Iran because ultimately it was Iran that did it," he said in an interview with Newsmax.
Trump described Biden's presidency as four terrible years.
"And I think that’s probably why Putin invaded; when he saw the incompetence of [General Mark] Milley and those people, he said, 'Wow, these people aren't very good. We'll go and carry out an invasion of Ukraine.' I really think that was a big, big factor," Trump stated.
Recall that U.S. Congressman Mike Waltz, the future national security advisor, stated that he expects a phone call between Trump and Putin in the "coming days and weeks." Putin has also expressed readiness to meet with Trump without any conditions.
Several countries are already offering their territory for a meeting between Trump and Putin, one of which is Switzerland.
Joe Biden has not spoken with Putin since the invasion, who has been declared wanted by the International Criminal Court.
