U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico. At the same time, he announced new taxes on imports from China.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing CNN.
Trump stated that the 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods will take effect on March 4, and he also mentioned that he might impose an additional 10% on Chinese imports.
CNN noted that Mexico, China, and Canada are the three largest trading partners of the United States. The simultaneous imposition of tariffs on all three countries could lead to a rapid increase in prices for American consumers, especially at a time when inflation is already on the rise.
On his Truth Social network, the American leader wrote thatdrugs continue to flow into his country from Mexico and Canada in very high and unacceptable quantities.
"We cannot allow this crisis to continue harming the U.S., and therefore, until it stops or is severely restricted, the proposed tariffs set to take effect on March 4 will indeed go into effect as planned," he noted.
It is worth noting that Trump also stated he is considering a 25% tariff against the European Union. The American leader believes that the union of 27 countries was "created to rob the United States."
During a meeting in Washington, French leader Emmanuel Macron tried to persuade Trump not to impose these tariffs. He emphasized that Europe has done nothing to warrant a U.S. response.
At the same time, Macron urged Trump to wage a trade war with China rather than with Europe.
In turn, Beijing warned that U.S. actions would "undermine the trust" of Chinese companies.
