Teachers and students of the Constantinople Secondary School of I-III degrees from the Velikonovoselkovsky settlement council in the Donetsk region, who were forced to evacuate to the Dnipropetrovsk region due to the war, have created a short documentary film titled "Porridge with Butter and Love: Ancient Tastes of Modern Karnaukhivka." This was reported by "Vydavno" referencing the City Information Service of Kamianske.

In their film, the authors narrate the history of poured porridge and demonstrate the process of its preparation over an open flame.

The ritual of preparing poured porridge originated in the village of Karnaukhivka on the right bank of the Dnipro, not far from Kamianske. The tradition of cooking is closely linked to the village's history, dating back to its founding by the Cossack Semen Karnaukh in 1737. It is likely that similar rituals existed in other regions of Ukraine.

Poured porridge is so named because it is prepared collectively. The cooking ritual is tied to a symbolic celebration marking the end of spring fieldwork. Villagers would gather in festive attire outdoors – in meadows, squares, and various corners of the village, bringing products along.

There is no single recipe for the dish. It depended on the ingredients brought, so each porridge turned out unique. The fundamental principles of preparation are passed down from generation to generation among the housewives. Special secrets are kept confidential.

For making poured porridge, a large five-legged cauldron is traditionally used, along with ingredients such as millet, rice, potatoes, lard, chicken goulash, eggs, onions, and various spices.

The primary significance of the ritual is social. It unites the community around important events tied to the agricultural calendar.

There is no specific date for preparing poured porridge. On the day it was served, no one was invited to the table – the readiness of the dish was announced by a song. After the first bowl, people would definitely dance and sing folk songs, and then return to the table.

The ritual is still practiced today. The tradition of preparing poured porridge for major celebrations has been preserved.

Residents of Karnaukhivka claim that this dish restores strength, provides positive energy, and inspires the gathering of a new harvest.

This work was prepared by students for participation in the All-Ukrainian multimedia project competition "Save from Oblivion."

In 2023, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine included the ritual of preparing Karnaukhiv poured porridge in the National Register of Elements of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine.
