Currently, sanctions against Russia are rated at six out of ten. However, their implementation remains low.
This was stated by U.S. Special Envoy Keith Kellogg, as reported by RBK-Ukraine referencing his speech at the Munich Security Conference.
"At present, most countries have sanctions against the Russian Federation, but the sanctions targeting oil products hit the hardest. They are selling these through a shadow fleet. A significant portion operates in the Baltic Sea, and we need to devise some kind of plan. Right now, on a scale from 1 to 10, sanctions are at level 6, but implementation is at 3. Therefore, we need sanctions that impact the economy," he said.
Kellogg reminded that in the past, powerful economic sanctions were imposed by the United States against Iran.
"We have done this in the past with Iran; we imposed sanctions that severely 'broke' that country," he emphasized.
According to him, drawing on the experience with Iran, one can consider the impact on Russia. They are prepared to lose hundreds of thousands of soldiers 'as in Stalingrad,' yet they are already recruiting North Koreans. This shows that they are paying their price.
"So, these aspects need to be balanced. We often talk about whether it’s a matter of planes, or military, or something else. But there should be a comprehensive plan that ensures pressure remains on Russia and is all-encompassing. This can also involve North Korea; we must not forget about such things," added the Trump representative.
Recently, European Commission spokesperson Pavlo Pinyo stated that the EU is preparing new sanctions against Russia in the energy sector, despite the plans and intentions of the United States. These sanctions will particularly target the import of fossil fuels.
Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of the G7 agreed that new sanctions against Russia will be linked to the cessation of the war in Ukraine. This statement was made following a meeting at the Munich Security Conference.
According to Western media, the European Union plans to announce the 16th package of sanctions against Russia on the third anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine. However, Hungary is once again blocking sanctions against Moscow.
According to Politico, Budapest agreed to concessions at the last moment, but laid down conditions.
