The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, has resigned from his position ahead of a plan by far-right opposition parliamentary parties to initiate impeachment proceedings against him. He announced that his resignation will take effect in two days.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing Digi24.

Iohannis justified his move by expressing a desire to prevent an internal and external crisis that could arise from his removal from office.

The president made a statement to the press announcing his resignation from the presidency of Romania.

"Today, the procedure for removing the president from office began in the Romanian parliament. This is a futile step, as in any case, I will leave my position in a few months after the election of a new president," he stated.

He claimed that his impeachment would lead to a crisis in the country. "In a few days, the Romanian parliament will vote for my removal, and Romania will enter into a crisis. Romania will enter a crisis due to the initiation of the vote on the president's resignation. All these efforts will have repercussions both domestically and, unfortunately, beyond its borders," he believes.

According to him, the voting process will have extremely negative implications domestically. "Society will be divided: some will agree, others will not. The entire discussion will focus solely on negativity. The whole society will be shaken. There will no longer be discussions about the upcoming presidential elections," the president added.

The Romanian parliament will consider the request for the removal of President Klaus Iohannis, submitted by the opposition and accepted by the joint permanent bureaus of both chambers, on February 11 at a joint plenary session at 10:00 AM. The leadership of both chambers has decided to hold a joint meeting to discuss the proposal for the removal of the President of Romania from office.

Romanian Elections

Let us recall that on November 24, 2024, the first round of presidential elections took place in Romania. According to the official results, the first place was taken by Calin Georgescu.

However, the Constitutional Court of Romania annulled the results of the first round of elections. This occurred after the court reviewed secret documents indicating that Georgescu's campaign was the result of organized manipulation from outside Romania.

Subsequently, the leaders of the Romanian government coalition parties agreed on a date for the repeat of the first round of presidential elections - May 4.
