The President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, announced the establishment of a council to prepare for new parliamentary elections. She warned the ruling party, "Georgian Dream," that if an agreement is not reached by December 29, the regime will collapse.

This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing NewsGeorgia.

According to Zourabichvili, a document outlining the minimum conditions for conducting new elections is already being prepared, which should take place soon. She emphasized that these elections would bring "truly new forces" and called for readiness.

On the eve of this announcement, during a rally, the president gave the ruling party "Georgian Dream" six days to announce the date for new elections. In response, the party labeled this demand as absurd and ignored it.

"The crisis is intensifying and deepening every day, which the ruling party either does not see or, I would say, is deliberately ignoring, pretending everything is fine. It seems that the priority is to illuminate the city or set up a Christmas village, or put up a Christmas tree, or organize a concert—at a time when no one is in a festive mood," Zourabichvili stated.

She noted that no matter how much the ruling party "Georgian Dream" turns a blind eye to the state of affairs, "it cannot alter this reality, and the reality is what lies before us, what we all see, feel, and what we need to rectify—this is the crisis."

The publication points out that it is still unclear how Zourabichvili plans to act on December 29—just two days before the New Year, "Georgian Dream" scheduled the inauguration of the new president.

However, Zourabichvili stated that if an agreement with "Georgian Dream" regarding new parliamentary elections is not reached by December 29, "we will reach elections through the collapse of the regime."

She did not clarify what form of "regime collapse" she was referring to, but reiterated that she does not intend to resign from her presidential duties.

Election in Georgia

Recall that on December 14, the electoral college in the Georgian parliament elected former footballer Mikhail Kavelashvili as the country's president. He was the only candidate nominated by the ruling party "Georgian Dream."

It is noteworthy that the outgoing president, Salome Zourabichvili, stated that she will not recognize the election results. In her statement, she also mentioned that she would remain in the presidential palace.

It is important to note that this situation followed the parliamentary elections held at the end of October 2024. The pro-Russian party "Georgian Dream" won, although opinion polls had predicted successful results for opposition parties.

Subsequently, protests erupted in the country. People are demanding new elections.
