In the Dnipropetrovsk region, the extraction of minerals has caused significant damage to the population of rare plants. This was reported by "Vidomo," referencing ecologist and photographer Svetlana Kiyak.
"In the Dnipropetrovsk region, near the valley of the Domotkan River, lies one of the largest titanium-bearing provinces in the world, a fragment of which is the Malyshevskoye (Samotkanskoye) deposit. Alluvial ilmenite-zircon ores have been mined here since 1953 through quarries in the upper reaches of the Samotkan River.
It is painful to witness how the nature of Upper Dniprovshchyna (or rather, what remains of it) is being rapidly destroyed by industrial quarries.
The distance from Volnogorsk to Verkhovtsevo has almost been eliminated already," she writes.
Kiyak also noted that this year, the titanium deposits of the Malyshevskoye (Samotkanskoye) complex of titanium-zircon alluvial deposits were sold at auction to the Azerbaijani company NEQSOL Holding.
"The fate of certain endemic species, such as the Pontic carnation Dianthus trifasciculatus Kit. = D. euponticus, raises particular concern, with several populations existing in our region (unfortunately right next to the quarries). Worldwide, only about 25 locations of this rare endemic species are known," emphasized the ecologist.
She also added a Google image showing that the upper reaches of the Samotkan River have been completely destroyed, and the sources of the Domotkan River are also being irreparably damaged.
"The sources of rivers are the sources of human existence. Their destruction must not be allowed!" Kiyak stressed.
