The leader of the Christian Democratic Union, Friedrich Merz, has issued sharp criticism of the United States. He believes that Germany needs to be more independent from the United States.

"My absolute priority will be achieving independence from the USA," the CDU leader stated.

He added that from the statements made last week, it is clear that the future of Ukraine is relatively indifferent to the United States.

According to unconfirmed exit poll data, the CDU, along with its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), received 29% of the votes.

Previously, Merz called on France and the United Kingdom for negotiations on nuclear protection. This was prompted by threats from the U.S. administration to withdraw support for Europe.
