The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, will make his first visit to Lebanon since 2020. During his time in the country, he will assist in expediting the formation of a government that can initiate a series of reforms.
This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Reuters.
The French leader is set to visit Beirut on Friday.
It is noted that following the ceasefire brokered by Paris and Washington last November between Israel and the Iran-backed group "Hezbollah," France, the USA, and Saudi Arabia have played a crucial role in helping Lebanon emerge from its political stalemate.
Recently, a new president was elected in the country, and a new prime minister has taken office.
Alongside Macron, the French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot will also visit Lebanon. According to the Foreign Minister, Paris has helped Lebanon "shift from escalation to recovery and turn a new page of hope" over the past three months.
"With popular support, broad internal consensus, and international backing, the new Lebanese government can act decisively to restore state sovereignty and rebuild Lebanon," the French official added.
A source close to Macron informed Reuters that the purpose of the trip is to emphasize the importance of Lebanon's sovereignty, assist in implementing structural economic reforms that will restore international trust, and ensure the existence of a unified government capable of advancing change.
Prior to the visit, the French president also held talks with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman regarding the situation in Lebanon.
French officials expressed optimism that Riyadh would provide funding and resources to strengthen the Lebanese Armed Forces.
The Lebanese army is currently working to secure the entire country and gain control over southern regions as part of a 60-day ceasefire plan, under which Israeli troops are to withdraw from Lebanon by the end of January.
Earlier, it was reported that in early December of last year, French President Emmanuel Macron and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman signed a strategic partnership agreement aimed at deepening bilateral ties between the countries and de-escalating the conflict in the Middle East, including Lebanon.
Leaders have also called for presidential elections in Lebanon. This initiative arose amidst the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Lebanese group "Hezbollah".
Additionally, it is worth noting that recently the Lebanese parliament elected a new president - General Joseph Aoun, who is backed by the USA.
