This week, NATO warships commenced patrols in the Baltic Sea. Some of the ships have anchored in the Mine Harbor of Tallinn.
This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing ERR.
The military vessels began their patrols as part of the Baltic Guard program.
Three NATO ships have dropped anchor in Tallinn. One of them is the Dutch Royal Navy frigate Tromp, which leads the squadron. This is a surface-to-air command ship. In 2010, Tromp participated in an anti-piracy operation off the coast of Africa, during which a boarding team dispatched from the ship attacked pirate vessels three times.
In the harbor near the Estonian capital, there are two more NATO ships - the German minesweeper Datteln and the hydrographic vessel Luymes, which has a mixed Dutch-Belgian crew.
The number of ships involved in the Baltic Sea patrol is not fixed and will vary depending on the situation. The Baltic Guard mission heavily relies on the cooperation of the naval forces from Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia.
Recall that at the end of 2024, underwater communication cables between Finland and Estonia were damaged in the Baltic Sea. During the investigation, the vessel Eagle S was detained, which is part of the "shadow fleet" of Russian tankers.
Prior to this, two other data transmission cables between Finland and Germany were severed. A Chinese cargo ship, Yi Peng 3, with a Russian captain was among the suspects.
Following these incidents, a proposal was made to initiate a program to protect the Baltic Sea from threats posed by Russia.
