The Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, announced Madrid's additional financial support for Ukraine. This humanitarian aid will amount to 10 million euros.
This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the Spanish Foreign Ministry.
The statement from the Spanish foreign ministry notes that Albares visited Ukraine on January 28 to "assess the impact of Russian aggression on Ukrainian territory and confirm Spain's support for the country's authorities, to whom he announced the transfer of another ten million euros in humanitarian aid."
The Spanish minister began his trip with a visit to Lviv, where he held several meetings, including with his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sibiga.
The official visit program also included diplomatic negotiations, support for reconstruction, and humanitarian initiatives.
The Spanish Foreign Ministry added that special attention was given to cultural revival, which was reflected in the opening of a new cultural center.
Thus, Albares, Sibiga, and UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay officially inaugurated the cultural center created with the support of the Spanish Development Cooperation Trust Fund and UNESCO.
"This center, funded by AECID, was established to create a space specifically dedicated to culture as a factor of peace and resilience in the military and post-war context in Ukraine, a country whose cultural productive structure has lost 90% of its resources due to the war following the Russian invasion," the Spanish ministry explained.
As noted by the Spanish Foreign Ministry, this center "complements Spain's comprehensive commitment to the reconstruction of Ukraine, which was embodied today in a new statement of 10 million euros from Spanish cooperation for humanitarian aid, which is in addition to the 100 million that Spain has provided to Ukraine since the start of the war."
Furthermore, the ministry reported that this humanitarian aid package includes another aid category for reconstruction, which has accumulated a total of 400 million euros since the beginning of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The Spanish Foreign Ministry also shared that Madrid's solidarity with Ukraine, beyond economic matters, was also "highlighted during Minister Albares' visit to a Lviv hospital, where he announced that our country will send a Spanish team of medical trainers to assist healthcare workers at the hospital."
The heads of the foreign ministries of Spain and Ukraine "analyzed the current situation," and Albares "confirmed Spain's support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression."
"Support is reflected in the fulfillment of bilateral commitments for military assistance to Ukraine, agreed upon last year by the Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, regarding the delivery of military equipment and training for Ukrainian soldiers in Spain as part of the European CSDP mission, which has trained about 7,000 servicemen," the Spanish Foreign Ministry reported.
Albares also confirmed support for Ukraine's EU accession process, which began during Spain's presidency in the EU.
"The minister was also very firm regarding the continuation of support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty, noting that neither peace for Ukraine can be achieved without Ukraine, nor European security without Europe," the Spanish ministry's release stated.
It is worth recalling that last summer, the Spanish Ministry of Defense reported that Madrid would transfer a new additional HAWK air defense battery to Ukraine.
In December 2024, the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, Rustem Umerov thanked Spain for the HAWK systems and requested additional assistance.
