The Gulf of Mexico will be renamed to the American Gulf on Google Maps. However, this only applies to Americans.

This was stated in a Google announcement, as reported by RBK-Ukraine referencing CBS News.

The company mentioned that they have received several inquiries regarding the assignment of new names in Google Maps. This can occur when they are updated in official government sources.

"When this happens, we will promptly update Google Maps in the U.S. to reflect Mount McKinley and the American Gulf," Google clarified.

The company also emphasized that the name of a location may appear differently depending on the user's location on Google Maps. If the name of a place varies across different countries, users will see the official name used in the country where they access Google Maps.

CBS News points out that while the U.S. government will officially refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the American Gulf - for example, in government documents and on official U.S. maps - other countries are not obligated to recognize this name.

Renaming the Gulf of Mexico

Recall that U.S. President Donald Trump signed a series of decrees following his inauguration. In particular, he renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf.

On January 25, the U.S. Department of the Interior officially announced the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico. The mountain Denali also received a new name; it is now called McKinley.
