Germany is set to become the primary target of tariffs from newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump upon his return to office. This could have a significant impact on the German economy.
This was stated by Germany's Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, as reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Politico.
Habeck pointed out that after Trump's return to the presidency, Germany will be the main target of new trade tariffs due to its positive trade balance with the United States.
The politician emphasized that any potential restrictions aimed at the entire EU would primarily affect the German economy. At the same time, Habeck stressed that the EU is ready to respond, but Germany must act in concert with its European partners to strengthen its position.
"You can be sure that the tariffs he might want to impose will be directed in such a way that they particularly hit the German economy... Regardless of what the next German government wants to do, it must do so in a European manner", Habeck noted.
It is worth mentioning that his statement came in the context of comments from center-right leader Friedrich Merz, who called Trump "predictable" and noted that his actions would serve as a stimulus for reforms in the EU, particularly in the defense sector.
