The European Commission states that the EU is prepared to end gas transit from Russia through Ukraine.

The European Union (EU) is prepared to halt the transit of gas from the Russian Federation (RF) through Ukraine. Europe's infrastructure is flexible enough to receive gas from other countries through alternative routes.

This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine, citing an unnamed representative from the European Commission, as quoted by Deutsche Welle.

"The impact of stopping the transit through Ukraine on the security of supply for the EU is limited," the European Commission representative stated.

She also added that the European Commission has been coordinating with EU member states for over a year, to prepare for alternative schemes.

According to the European Commission representative, Europe's gas infrastructure has been strengthened due to significant liquefied natural gas (LNG) import capacities. Specifically, the reliability of gas supply has been enhanced by increasing energy efficiency and expanding the use of renewable energy sources.

Halting Russian Gas Transit through Ukraine

Ukraine does not plan to continue the transit of Russian gas to Europe after January 1, 2025. At the same time, as President Volodymyr Zelensky stated, our country is ready to transport gas to Europe, provided it is not Russian.

Meanwhile, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico insists on the continuation of transit. In December, he visited Moscow, where he met with dictator Vladimir Putin. In particular, he threatened to halt electricity supplies to Ukraine in response to the refusal to transit gas.
