On the night of January 14, unidentified drones once again attacked Engels (Russia), where firefighters had been battling a blaze at a refinery for five days following a drone strike. Now, it is reported that an oil depot is ablaze once more.
This information comes from RBK-Ukraine, citing Russian Telegram channels.
One of the first to report on the attack was the SHOT channel. According to local residents who were sources for the outlet, around 4:25 AM (Kyiv time), approximately 4-5 explosions were heard over Engels in the Saratov region. At that moment, sirens were sounding in the city, and the air defense system was activated. Subsequently, smoke was visible over one of the districts of the settlement. At that time, it was presumed that a fire had broken out, and this information was soon confirmed. Relevant videos were also shared on social media.
The Mash channel claims that around 10 explosions were heard as a result of the drone attack. Meanwhile, residents of Engels told "Ostорожно Новости" that a fire had reignited at the oil depot following the drone strike. They reported that the site was hit at least twice. However, it remains unclear whether this is the same facility that was attacked on January 8.
For his part, the governor of the Saratov region, Roman Bousargin, confirmed the incidents. He stated that there has been damage to an industrial facility in the city of Engels due to the drone attack. According to him, emergency and operational services are currently working on-site in an intensified mode. There have been no reports of injuries.
According to the latest information, explosions over the city are ongoing. At the time of publication, at least two more loud sounds were heard. Residents claim that the air defense system is operational. Authorities are urging people to seek shelter in a safe place.
Recall that yesterday, Governor Bousargin announced that open flames had been extinguished at the burning oil depot in Engels, which had been ablaze for five days since the attack. The fire initially broke out on the night of January 8 when it was struck by drones.
However, as with the current situation, Bousargin did not specify that the local oil depot "Kombinat Kristall" was on fire; he referred to it as an "industrial facility."
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed the strike on the 8th. They clarified that the "Kombinat Kristall" refinery was supplying fuel to the military airfield "Engels-2," which hosts Russia's strategic aviation, including Tu-95MS and Tu-160 bombers.
