The U.S. House of Representatives has endorsed Mike Johnson's candidacy for the position of Speaker. Almost all Republicans in the lower chamber of Congress voted in his favor.

This is reported by RBK-Ukraine citing The New York Times.

According to NYT, Johnson secured 218 necessary votes from lawmakers to become the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, Hakeem Jeffries, the leader of the Democratic minority in the House, garnered 215 votes.

Johnson was able to obtain this number of votes thanks to Congress members Ralph Norman and Keith Self, who chose to support his candidacy after initially voting for other candidates.

How the Voting Proceeded

It is noteworthy that Johnson required near-total support for his candidacy from Republicans. He could afford to lose only one vote.

Initially, only 216 members of the House supported Johnson's candidacy. Three Republicans cast their votes for other candidates. However, Johnson had the opportunity to persuade them, which he utilized.

It is important to point out that Mike Johnson was elected Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives on October 25, 2023. This occurred after the resignation of Republican Kevin McCarthy, who had held the position since January 2023.

Johnson is one of the allies of the elected President Donald Trump, who personally endorsed his candidacy.
