The death of the former U.S. president was confirmed by his son. However, he did not specify the immediate cause of death. It is known that Jimmy Carter died on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia.

In a statement from February 2023, the Carter Center announced that the former president would cease further treatment after a series of hospitalizations and spend his remaining time at home under hospice care. In recent years, he had been battling an aggressive form of melanoma - skin cancer, with tumors that had spread to the liver and brain.

His wife, Rosalynn, passed away a year earlier, on November 19, at the age of 96. The couple, who were close partners in public life, were married for over 77 years, making it the longest presidential marriage in U.S. history. His last public appearance was at her funeral in Plains, where he sat in the front row in a wheelchair.

"He was a leader who served as president during a time when Ukraine had not yet gained independence, yet his heart was always with us as we fought for freedom... Jimmy Carter dedicated his life to promoting peace in the world and defending human rights. This is what I ask you to remember today: peace matters, and peace must remain paramount in the face of threats to these values," wrote the head of state, Volodymyr Zelensky, on social media platform X.

What is known about the former U.S. president

Jimmy Carter became the President of the United States in 1976 as a member of the Democratic Party. Prior to that, he served as the Governor of Georgia and was also a senator.

In 1979, during his presidency, the U.S. and the USSR signed the SALT II agreement aimed at limiting strategic arms, symbolically marked by the famous "kiss" between President Carter and General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev. By 1980, at the height of Cold War tensions, he initiated a boycott of the Olympic Games in Moscow. In the same year, Carter lost the election to Ronald Reagan, after which he founded the Carter Center for human rights.

In the new century, in 2002, the 39th President of the United States was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for his efforts to promote peaceful resolutions to conflicts around the world and for his fight for human rights."

In 2015, he was diagnosed with cancer.
