There are officially just over 19 million registered voters in Romania, nearly a million of whom reside abroad. Voting in other countries began on Friday. Almost 19,000 polling stations have been opened for the election.
In the first round of the presidential elections, 14 candidates were included on the ballots. One candidate, former Prime Minister of Romania Ludovic Orban, has withdrawn from the race. He urged supporters to back the leader of the center-right opposition Save Romania Union (USR), Elena Lasconi.
According to opinion polls, the leading candidates are left-wing Prime Minister of Romania Marcel Ciolacu and the head of the opposition far-right party AUR, George Simion, who is suspected of having ties with Russia.
This marks the ninth presidential election in Romania since the 1989 revolution. Over the past 35 years, the country has had four presidents: Ion Iliescu, Emil Constantinescu, Traian Băsescu, and Klaus Iohannis. The latter served two terms and is ineligible to participate in this year's election.

Additionally, this year saw elections for the European Parliament, resulting in a change of leadership in key European institutions.
Recently, parliamentary elections were held in Georgia. However, the voting was not peaceful and was accompanied by numerous violations. The opposition refused to acknowledge the election results.
