Romania has responded to the criticism from U.S. Vice President JD Vance. Bucharest is planning to hold free and fair presidential elections.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu on social media X.
During his speech at the Munich Security Conference, Vance expressed outrage over the annulment of the results of the first round of the presidential elections in Romania, where a clearly pro-Russian candidate, Calin Georgescu, garnered the majority of votes.
According to the U.S. Vice President, the elections were postponed "due to unconvincing suspicions from intelligence agencies and under immense pressure from neighboring countries on the continent."
Moreover, Vance added that such an incident demonstrated that democracy in Romania could supposedly be undermined with a few hundred thousand dollars and digital advertising from another country.
In response to these accusations, Ciolacu noted that his country remains a "defender of democratic values," which Europe shares with the U.S.
"All Romanian authorities are striving to organize free and fair elections, empowering citizens and ensuring the freedom to vote," he added.
Let us recall that today, February 14, U.S. Vice President JD Vance delivered a speech at the Munich Security Conference.
His address focused on criticizing democracy in Europe. In particular, he pointed out that European countries fear their own voters.
The key statements from Vance are highlighted in RBK-Ukraine's article.
