Europe is increasingly discussing the possibility of forming a new coalition to support Ukraine's security. This involves establishing a peacekeeping or military mission that could ensure a ceasefire and provide guarantees of safety for Ukraine.
In a comment to RBK-Ukraine, Vladimir Fesenko, head of the Center for Applied Political Studies "Penta," shared his insights on the matter.
However, the implementation of such an initiative depends on numerous factors, including Russia's stance and the level of support among European countries.
The political scientist emphasizes that the deployment of any foreign troops, even in the format of a peacekeeping mission, is only possible after agreements on a ceasefire are reached.
According to Fesenko, if NATO refuses to accept Ukraine into the Alliance, the country will need alternative security guarantees.
He mentioned that one option could be the deployment of partner countries' troops along the front line.
According to Reuters, the idea of forming a coalition of 5-8 countries is currently being considered, which could operate based on bilateral agreements with Ukraine.
This list includes: Poland, France, the United Kingdom, the Baltic states, and possibly Scandinavian countries.
"And I fully anticipate that Germany may join after the parliamentary elections. The Netherlands might also participate, although there could be certain complications," he added.
At the same time, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk noted that his country is not currently considering sending its troops. However, this position may change depending on further developments and agreements with partners.
Experts believe that the more countries that join the coalition, the greater the chances of successfully deterring Russia from further aggression. The formation of a "coalition of the determined" could become a crucial element in ensuring security for Ukraine, especially in the absence of direct NATO support.
