Russia aims to maintain two military bases in Syria: the Khmeimim airbase and the naval facility in Tartus.
This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Bloomberg.
Unnamed sources in Moscow, Europe, and the Middle East informed the publication that Russia is negotiating with the new leadership of Syria to retain its two military bases within the country.
According to a Bloomberg source in Moscow, the Russian Ministry of Defense believes it has an unofficial agreement with "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham" allowing it to keep the military bases in Syria.
It is noteworthy that Russia is currently engaged in the active evacuation of its contingent from Syrian territory. In particular, several large landing ships from the aggressor state have been dispatched to Tartus for the transportation of military equipment, according to the Main Intelligence Directorate.
At the same time, the leader of the "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham" rebels, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, recently referred to Iran and Russia as "colonizers" when commenting on their support for Assad's regime.
It is important to note that Russia has been actively assisting Bashar al-Assad in staying in power. Specifically, during the recent weeks of conflict in the country, Russian forces have conducted airstrikes against the "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham" rebels.
Additionally, Moscow has agreed to provide asylum to dictator Bashar al-Assad, who has fled the country.
