Yesterday, it was reported that the underwater electric cable Estlink 2, linking Finland and Estonia, had been damaged. The police are investigating the potential involvement of a foreign vessel in this incident.
This information comes from RBK-Ukraine citing Reuters.
On Thursday, the Finnish police stated that they are investigating and verifying whether a foreign ship was responsible for the damage to the underwater power cable. However, the name of the vessel has not been disclosed.
The agency notes that the Baltic Sea countries are on heightened alert for possible acts of sabotage following a series of disruptions to electric cables, telecommunications lines, and gas pipelines since 2022.
According to the operator Fingrid, the Estlink 2 connection line, with a capacity of 658 megawatts (MW), remains shut down after the disconnection that began at noon local time on Wednesday. Currently, only the Estlink 1 line, with a capacity of 358 MW, is operational between the two countries.
"The police, in collaboration with the Border Guard and other authorities, are investigating the sequence of events related to the incident," stated the Finnish police.
Recall that earlier, the publication Aftonbladet also reported that Finland does not rule out the possibility of intentional damage to the underwater power line in the Gulf of Finland. In particular, two vessels were observed there. One of them passed by around the same time that the emergency disconnection of Estlink 2 occurred.
