The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, aims to foster friendly relations with the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. However, Trump's plan for peace in Ukraine may resemble that of Joe Biden.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing The New York Times.
According to the publication, Trump is entering the presidency with a vision of America's role in the world that significantly diverges from that of his predecessor. Specifically, he desires to cultivate amicable ties with Putin, which could lead to a reduction in U.S. support for Ukraine and poses a threat of withdrawing from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Nonetheless, despite these aspirations, Trump will also discover many aspects of Biden's policies that he may appreciate. Aside from notable exceptions concerning Europe and his strategies regarding Russia and Ukraine, Trump's initial approach could surprisingly align with Biden's status quo.
"There is more continuity between administrations of different parties—even those with very different styles, like Trump and Biden—than an average observer might expect. We tend to focus on the significant differences," said Richard Fontaine, executive director of the Center for a New American Security.
One reason for this is that Mr. Biden has continued several key policies from Trump's first term.
Donald Trump previously stated that he could end the war between Russia and Ukraine in a single day. Media reports indicated that his "peace plan" might involve the transfer of some Ukrainian territories.
Another version of the plan, articulated by British publications, suggests the establishment of a buffer zone between Ukraine and Russia, which would be protected by European forces.
At the same time, one of Trump's advisors labeled the return of Crimea to Ukraine as "unrealistic," but this statement was refuted by the office of the elected president, calling it inaccurate.
