It is clear that the U.S. does not consider Ukraine a member of NATO, according to Waltz.

The U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz stated that the United States does not currently see Ukraine as a NATO member. As for security guarantees, they should be the subject of negotiations.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing a broadcast from CNN.

According to Trump's advisor, any peace agreement in Ukraine will include "certain territorial concessions in exchange for future security guarantees." However, the United States is not in a hurry to provide security guarantees.

"These should be security guarantees led by Europe... And then, you know, let’s not get ahead of ourselves regarding what type of support we will provide or not," Waltz stated.

Trump's advisor noted that security guarantees will be part of the negotiations. However, they do not include Ukraine's NATO membership.

"It is already clear that we do not see Ukraine as a NATO member. Because that would automatically pull American troops into Ukraine," Waltz said during the CNN broadcast.

Additionally, the advisor mentioned that the Trump administration "doubts that Zelensky is ready to end the war."

"It’s unclear whether Zelensky is even going to negotiate, or if he will ever be able to reach an agreement with Putin," Waltz said.

Ukraine and NATO

Recall that Ukraine hoped to receive an official invitation to NATO at the summit in Washington in July 2024, but this did not happen.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he considers Ukraine's NATO membership unlikely or impractical.

Later, Trump even suggested that Ukraine should forget about joining NATO.

"I can say, forget about NATO. That’s probably the reason why everything (the war in Ukraine - ed.) started," Trump stated.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, for his part, emphasized that if Ukraine is not in NATO, then the Alliance should be on Ukrainian territory. According to him, the alternative to Ukraine joining NATO is the deployment of Alliance troops on Ukrainian soil.
