Experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) have found that Russian occupiers are using grenades containing banned chemical substances in their war against Ukraine.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine referencing the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
The Ministry noted that OPCW experts analyzed Russian tear gas grenades RG-Vo, as well as soil and grass samples provided by Ukraine.
"As a result, two independent certified laboratories of the OPCW confirmed that the evidence provided by Ukraine contains the substance CS, which is part of crowd control agents," the ministry added.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Ukraine continuously informs the international community about Russia's use of banned chemical substances, including RG-Vo grenades. From February 2023 to February 2025, there have been 6,129 recorded instances of Russian soldiers using munitions that contained hazardous substances, including:
Such actions by Russia violate Article 1, Paragraph 5 of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling, and Use of Chemical Weapons.
"The leadership of the Russian Federation, while creating the impression of readiness to cease armed aggression against Ukraine, is openly mocking the international community and undermining global efforts aimed at achieving a world free of chemical weapons," the ministry stated.
They also called for the creation of an international coalition to hold Russia accountable for violating the obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention.
Recall that earlier, the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that since the beginning of the full-scale war, Russians have poisoned more than 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers with chemical substances.
Moreover, according to their statements, three Ukrainian warriors have died due to the occupiers' use of chemical weapons.
